Jimbaran Beach Fresh Seafood South Bali

Jimbaran is located to the south of Bali, midway between the airport and Nusa Dua is the fishing village of Jimbaran with its beautiful bay, long stretch of white sand beach and clear waters with brightly colored boats anchored along the shore.

The Jimbaran seafood market located on the beach is probably the biggest in Bali and has the widest selection of fresh seafood. And in conjunction with the seafood market there are also traditional seaside seafood restaurants on the beach where one can enjoy the catch of the day - and very popular with locals and visitors alike.

Jimbaran Bay is home to about fifty grilled seafood restaurants in three different groupings, all set along the beach. Each of the restaurants is much of a muchness and of the groupings, the most southerly closest to the Four Seasons is the most popular these days.Tables are set up right on the sand and if you sit at the lowest tables at high tide, you can even get your feet wet.

The restaurants serve essentially the same menu with one basic dining format:

  • fire-grilled seafood with your own choice of various fish, crab, squid, shrimp, lobster and other shellfish
  • local green vegetables steamed with garlic
  • rice or french fired potatoes
  • local spicy sauces

Simply go up to the seafood tanks and choose the number and type of seafood you want to eat, pay by weight and the produce is grilled there and then. You also have the option of ordering from the menu but that is nothing like so much fun. Prices are very reasonable by western standards and dinner for two with local Bintang beer or soft drinks will cost in the range of Rp 250,000-350,000 depending on quantity and type of seafood selected. Everything is freshly caught as Jimbaran is still a functioning fishing village. If you want to drink wine, bring it with you and pay a nominal corkage charge.

Jimbaran is directly south of the airport, on the way from Denpasar towards Nusa Dua. Jimbaran village is the narrow neck of Bali Island, and thus it has two remarkably different beaches. On the west, Jimbaran Beach faces the Jimbaran Bay, recently lined by new luxurious resorts. On the east, the beach faces the body of water sheltered by Benoa Harbor. Jimbaran is a sleepy cove where fleets of fishing boats color the scene. Formerly a relatively quiet area, its image has improved dramatically with the opening of the beautiful Four Season's Resort and the Inter-Continental. The last couple of years, it has become even busier still with grilled seafood restaurants going up at a rapid pace along the beach, attracting local families and tourists in droves.

A popular spot for windsurfing and sailing small craft, which are available for rent, Jimbaran's grey sand and calm waters are attracting more people but the beach still has a sleepy feeling. A day at Jimbaran is made even more popular because of the all the wonderful options to eat. Choose from simple local food, the freshest fish. It is also a popular spot for sunset.

There is little in the way of budget accommodation though. Because of the number of five-star beach resorts, there are also many high-end villas in this area, particularly on the ridges of high ground above Jimbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the "Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row".

The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beach and is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilled seafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist draw in the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset.
